A
brief history of the Faculty
In 1975 the Faculty of Social Sciences was reorganized into
its present structure. Chairs were changed into institutes
consisting of several departments. In 1993, the Institute
of Pedagogy became a separate Faculty of Educational Studies.
Today, the Faculty of Social Sciences (along with the Faculty
of Law and Administration and the Faculty of Modern Languages
and Literatures) is one of the biggest faculties at the
University. It consists of five institutes: the Institute
of Philosophy, the Institute of Cultural Studies, the Institute
of Political Studies and Journalism, the Institute of Psychology
and the Institute of Sociology. The Faculty is located in
three buildings in the Szamarzewskiego Street. The fourth
building was opened in 2000. It has four lecture halls and
holds part of the Faculty library.
Today, the Faculty of Social Sciences employs approximately
250 lecturers and has about 8500 students. The Faculty has
established close research links with academic institutions
in Germany, USA, Great Britain, France, Israel and Sweden.
Many employees have been awarded prestigious grants (e.g.
the Fulbright Grant, the Humboldt Grant).
The scientists working at the Faculty of Social Sciences
publish about 50 books and about 700 articles each year.
Some of them are members of the Polish Academy of Sciences,
the Central Committee for Academic Degrees and Scientific
Titles, the Polish Parliament, and local political and social
organizations. The Faculty is a host to two foundations
and editorial boards of several scientific journals (e.g.
Polish Studies in the Philosophy of the Humanities, Methodology
Studies).
