A
brief history of the Faculty
Poznań
University was officially opened on the 7th of May 1919,
but the Faculty of Philosophy being the core of this newly
founded university started its activity already on the 30th
of January 1919. The Section of Mathematics and Natural
Sciences originally within the Faculty of Philosophy became
a separate Faculty in the academic year 1924/1925. The new
Faculty was seated at the beginning in Collegium Minus,
where the research work in physics was conducted in two
Laboratories: the Laboratory of Experimental Physics and
the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics. After the Second
World War the laboratories were moved to Collegium Chemicum
and in 1950 they were transformed into Chairs. In 1966 the
Chair of Molecular Physics separated from the Chair of Experimental
Physics and in 1969 the three Chairs became the Institute
of Physics. At the same time the Chair of Acoustics was
founded. The Institute of Physics and the Chair of Acoustics
were parts of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry,
from which the Faculty of Chemistry evolved in 1978. In
1985 the Chair of Acoustics became the Institute of Acoustics.
Further development of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics
led to the emergence of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics
and the Faculty of Physics in 1993. At present the Faculty
of Physics includes the Institute of Acoustics, the Institute
of Physics and the Astronomical Observatory, founded in
1919. The Faculty of Physics employs 26 full professors
and 26 university professors. Irrespective of the international
contacts of its units, the Faculty as a whole has been successfully
co-operating with many university centres throughout the
world.
