In 1951 the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Adam Mickiewicz University was transformed into the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. In 1968 the Institute of Chemistry was established within the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
In 1981 the Institute of Chemistry grew to become the Faculty of Chemistry, whose major departments at that time were: Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry Analytical Chemistry and Chemical Technology.
Today the Faculty of Chemistry comprises 25 research departments and 10 research laboratories, the Technological Center, the Instrumental Analysis Facility, and the Library. The faculty members (64 professors and associated professors) are engaged in research in almost all fields of modern chemistry. The Faculty is also committed to academic teaching. The overall enrolment in the 2004/2005 academic year reached over 1100 students.
